We are a team of three masters candidates, attending a dual degree program at IESA (L'école Internationale des métiers de la culture et du marché de l'art) and Paris School of Business. To achieve our MBA in arts and cultural management, we are organizing an art exhibition as our final project entitled RE: Renew, Reduce, Recycle, in contemporary art, which will be held from the 25th of September to the 1st of October at IESA Gallery (1 Cité Griset, 75011 Paris).

Renew, Reduce, Recycle, in contemporary art contains three keywords to provide a sustainable art practice, but also sustainable behavior. For our program, we choose three artists, each of them fitting to one of the words.

Renew goes to Bram Braam. He creates an installation and exhibits a series of wall pieces made with a mix of artificial and found materials giving found objects a new life. Braam intends to deal with our concept in a circular way through a vortex of reinvented materials and found objects.

Bram Braam is a Dutch artist born in 1980 in Sittard, The Netherlands. He is currently living and working in Berlin. At a young age, he graduated from Sint Lucas university at Boxtel with a degree in communication and design. He got a second Bachelor degree at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Den Bosch in 2009. His practice deals with architecture and the constant evolution of our daily surroundings. Braam focuses on wall reliefs, sculptural works of a subtle or monumental scale. Many influences can be found in these works: the American minimalism of Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt, the utopian thinking of architects such as Le Corbusier, yet also the modernism of Bauhaus and De Stijl. Braam intends to deal with our concept in a circular way through a vortex of reinvented materials and found objects. He renews them.

Reduce is linked to Song Rao. Through his photos of the dress he created, by using COVID masks, he tries to raise awareness about the pollution caused by the wrong disposal of the single-use masks. He expresses himself mainly through photography, video art and installations, trying to motivate the view to reduce consumption and disposal.

Song Rao is a Chinese environmental researcher and artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York City. His work discusses the interaction between people, society, and the natural environment. He has a bachelor’s degree in Stage Art Directing from The National Academy of Chinese Arts in Beijing, which he acquired in 2008. In the following years, Rao continued to deepen his knowledge by attending two master’s degrees. The first one in 2019 on Fashion Marketing from LIM College, Manhattan, and the second one on Sustainable Environmental Systems from Pratt Institute School of Architecture in Brooklyn in 2021. This program gave him a new level of understanding of sustainability. Combining his previous professions in stage art and fashion, he aims to create a new language to link up with more young people to reconsider the adverse environmental impact and social impact of human activities. As a queer artist whose work focuses on sustainability, Rao believes that social equity is a key message that needs to be delivered. Rao’s artwork includes but is not limited to gender, sexuality, race, and wealth. He expresses himself mainly through photography, video art and installations. He wants to activate the viewer to reduce.

Recycle connects to Gisèle Gonon’s work. For commissioned pieces she is going to exhibit, she only works with recycled materials. This is typical for her practice that focuses on agricultural production models and aims to overcome the rural-urban duality by focusing on local scales to understand global stakes. Produced with common, upcycled, or organic materials, her practice flourishes in a polymorphous body of work, ranging from drawings to video art and sculptures and installations, and many more.

Gisèle Gonon is a French visual artist and researcher currently living and working in Berlin. She has a Bachelor’s in Communication from the Superior Institution of Fine Arts of Saint-Étienne, and graduated with a master’s degree in Arts from the same university. Her work focuses on agricultural production models and aims to overcome the rural-urban duality by focusing on local scales to understand global stakes. Produced with common, upcycled, or organic materials, her practice flourishes in a polymorphous body of work, ranging from drawing to sculpture to installation, from sewing to sound experiment, from video to conceptual cereal garden. The rural and peasant environment she grew up in, the farm of her parents, and the future use of the family lands offer a field of experimentation, blending theoretical research with personal implications. However she does not romanticize the figure of the peasant, life in the countryside or the relationship with nature. She tends to create new critical situations to think otherwise of our production models, whether in agriculture or art. Her critical approach involves being sensitive to notions of queer ecology, especially what this concept implies in terms of deconstruction, inclusion and recyle. Her approach to the exhibition includes works made of fully recycled fabrics and materials.

Giannina Mosimann - Production Manager, Catalogue

Giannina Mosimann is from Zurich, Switzerland. In her bachelor’s degree she studied Art History and she moved to Paris in October 2021 for the master program in management of arts and culture at IESA and PSB. Giannina worked in different Galleries in Zurich and for a private art collection in the collection management team. After the master program she will do an internship in sales and art advisory at Singulart in Paris.

Mixalis Lymperakis - Administration and Finance

Mixalis Lymperakis is from Athens, Greece. In his bachelor’s degree he studied Economics in the National University of Greece and since October 2021 he had been living in Paris where he is attending a double degree masters in Arts and Cultural Management at PSB and IESA. Mixalis has worked for a framing company in Athens and for two museums in the department of restoring the exhibiting the collection. After the master program he is looking forward to starting his career in Greece.

Zhuoting LI - Co Curation, Design, Meditation

Zhuoting Li is from Zhejiang, China. She completed a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics. She moved to Paris in October 2021 for double master degrees of Arts and Cultural Management at Paris School of Business and Institut d’Études Supérieures des Arts. Zhuoting worked as a curator and designer in different galleries and studios in China, Egypt and Poland. After the master program she is looking forward to starting her PhD on the topic of ‘Non-profit art institutions interact with audiences’.
