Study Trip to Rome – An Immersive Journey into Baroque and Classicism
The Bachelor in Arts Management students at IESA International recently had the extraordinary opportunity to delve into the heart of art history during an exceptional study trip to Rome. Accompanied by Professors David Mandrella and Carolina Ariza, they spent three days exploring the masterpieces of the Baroque and Classicism periods in the Eternal City, combining academic learning with cultural discovery.
Rome, an open-air museum in itself, proved to be an inspiring and immersive learning environment. This trip allowed students not only to deepen their theoretical knowledge but also to enhance their artistic sensitivity by experiencing firsthand the masterpieces they study in class.
An exceptional itinerary: masterpieces and hidden treasures
The Roman journey began with one of the city's most iconic landmarks: the Trevi Fountain. This Baroque masterpiece, designed by Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, is a stunning example of the theatricality and dynamism of the period. After following the tradition of tossing a coin into the fountain, the students continued their immersion with visits to Baroque churches featuring the revolutionary paintings of Caravaggio. Under the expert guidance of Professor Mandrella, they analyzed the artist’s use of chiaroscuro, a technique that transformed painting and influenced countless artists.
The visit to the Capitoline Museum was another highlight of the trip. Located on one of Rome’s seven hills, the museum houses an impressive collection of ancient sculptures and Baroque masterpieces, including works by the brilliant Lorenzo Bernini, a defining figure of the 17th century.
Students also had the privilege of entering Villa Medici, the historic residence of the French Academy in Rome. This prestigious institution continues to host young artists from around the world, providing them with a creative sanctuary. This visit allowed students to explore the vital role of cultural institutions in supporting the arts and emerging talent.
The awe of the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican
No visit to Rome would be complete without a stop at the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Standing beneath Miche langelo’s legendary frescoes, including the magnificent ceiling and The Last Judgment, the students were struck by the sheer artistic and spiritual grandeur of the Renaissance. This moment was a profound experience for many, creating a lasting connection between art, faith, and history.
A total and inspiring immersion
Immersion Beyond the monuments and museums, the group also explored Villa Doria Pamphili, Rome’s largest landscaped park, offering a refreshing escape into nature. The journey concluded with a visit to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica – Palazzo Barberini, where students admired a final showcase of Baroque refinement.
More than just an academic outing, this trip was a true source of inspiration and artistic awakening for our students. Experiencing these masterpieces in person, absorbing the atmosphere of historically rich sites, and observing the power of Baroque compositions left an indelible mark on them.
Through this immersive experience, IESA International continues its commitment to providing dynamic and hands-on learning, bringing art history to life through anengaging and interactive approach.
